Birthday Month

Someone very close to me has been reminding me to celebrate what I have instead of what I do not. His advice has been the best that I have received all year. Those of us in my Vitiligo family know that we still have to deal with all the things that everyone else worries about, in addition to our "vit". Women especially focus on the physical aspects of our bodies such as gaining weight, stretch marks, wrinkles, gray hair...the list could go on and on. As I reflect on my recent birthday, I look forward to those things. My friends and family showered me with their love. I am so happy to be alive and to have so much love in my life.

Last year, I gave myself five minutes a day to feel sad. This year, I will give myself more than five minutes everyday looking in the mirror and loving what I see. I am also starting to pay attention to the fact that others like what they see when they look at me, most often not detecting my vitiligo until I point it out.  It is good to be me.  If you observe, you will recognize that it is good to be you too.

I would bet a heavy wager that the beautiful woman I know and love fighting for her life in a war against cancer would love to only have to worry about wrinkles or a new "vit" spot.

Aging is living.  Live healthy and age gracefully. I'll let you know if and when I find my first gray hair.

Happy Birthday to me!!
